Why Install a Sump Pump Outside?

Do you have issues with water filling your home’s basement after heavy rains? A sump pump is a submersible device that drains the water and directs it into a nearby dry well, detention pond or storm drain. While many homeowners install sump pumps in the basement, an outdoor installation is preferable or necessary in some situations.

When to Consider an Outdoor Pump Installation

If frequent flooding occurs and your basement or crawl space is too small for a sump pump, installing one outside might be your only option. If you have a pump in your basement but still have water issues, you can install a second unit outside to bolster your water removal efforts.

If you live in an area with a high water table, which occurs when the rock and surrounding ground materials connect with the upper soil layer due to excessive water, an outdoor pump can collect and redirect groundwater away from your home before it reaches the basement.

A noisy sump pump can be a concern for some homeowners. Placing the pump outdoors contributes to a quieter indoor environment. Also, depending on where you live, your municipality may require an outdoor installation to comply with local building codes and regulations.

How to Install a Sump Pump Outside

Here’s a brief overview of how to install an exterior sump pump:

  1. Choose a spot where water accumulates or is practical for water collection.
  2. Dig a pit large enough to accommodate the pump and piping. The ideal depth typically is 4 feet or less.
  3. Place the pump basin or pit liner inside the pit.
  4. Position the pump in the pit and connect the discharge pipe.
  5. Install a check valve on the discharge pipe to keep water from flowing back into the basin.
  6. Backfill the pit with crushed stone or gravel and test the pump.
  7. Route the discharge piping away from the property and direct it toward the drainage area.
